Lisianthus is one of our favorite flowers to grow for it’s outstanding cut flower qualities. This spring, 2023, we grew over 3600 plants, bringing a sea of color to our production garden. There is nothing quite like seeing thousands of buds dancing in the breeze. They were, without a doubt, the showstoppers of our first open-farm day.
Lisianthus is native to Texas, however, the cultivars we grow on our farm have been bred for large showy blooms, stunning colors, ruffled petals, and a few other desirable cut flower traits. From bud to bloom, these plants are magnificent. Lisianthus is happy to grow in a small space as well as pots, making them perfect for large scale flower farms and home gardeners alike.
A long lasting cut flower
Earning its place on our farm year after year, lisianthus is one of the longest lasting cut flowers we grow, second only to ageratum, which tends to root in the vase before it ever fades. With adequate water, that is changed daily, we can easily get a two week vase life out of blooms.
A sea of color
From vibrant purple to pale lavender, bright green to deep brown, there is a color for every palette.
We tend to gravitate toward soft pastels, but to keep our customers happy, we throw a few bright hues in the mix, and will be testing more in the future.
Ruffles and Fringe
Lisianthus is available with different petal characteristics. We love the frilly ruffled types, and the fringe varieties are winning us over each season. Double petal varieties make these flowers an excellent alternative to roses in some designs.
Stems
Each variety is different, however, each stem often has multiple blooms, which can be separated out to maximize the blooms in vases and arrangement; another reason florists love this flower. The multiple blooms on each stem makes this a no-brainer for diy-ers looking to maximize their money on homemade arrangements and bouquets.
If you’ve ever dreamed of an armful of beautiful flowers, lisianthus is the flower for you.
